Garage Additions
Garage Additions Step By Step
Every homeowner dreams of the perfect garage. These dreams do not just involve a place to put the car, however. Storage spaces, workshops, home offices, perhaps an apartment above it for extra income, all of these are valid reasons that people want garage additions built onto or next to, their homes. This is not your average do-it-yourself project, however, and there are certain steps that you may need to take to achieve this particular dream.

Step One: Do your Homework
Before any garage additions get to the actual blueprint stage, your first step should be to verify that it can even be done in your area. Check with the zoning board of your community, as well as any homeowner associations and county offices, to make sure that this type of construction is allowed in your area. This quest for information should also help you determine exactly where you can build it, how far from the property line, what materials are approved for it and whether or not it can be attached to the main house. If you are planning on adding an apartment as well as the garage, this research should also tell you if it will be allowed, as well.
Step Two: Planning Stage
Now that you know what you can or cannot do with your intended space, it is time to check out some blueprints. Keep in mind that if your project is going to go beyond the carport stage, you may also want to interview contractors for help with this project. You will need to grade a section of your land for a driveway, a foundation will have to be dug and poured, walls and roof built, and at least the minimum amount of electricity will have to be wired into the structure, for an interior light and maybe a garage door opener. Definitely not a do-it-yourself project when you think about it.
Step Three: Permits and Construction
Now that you have all the details hammered out, it is time to get to work! After you get all the licenses and permits your town needs before construction starts, that is. Depending on your town’s zoning, you may also have to arrange for a building inspector to visit the site, before, during and after the construction is complete. When working with a contractor, you also have the benefit of not having to seek out help to build garage additions because the contractor will bring along trusted crews to handle all the details of the construction. All you have to do now is step back and watch, deal with the building inspector, and watch your dream unfold.
